  1. Prescribed Medication – This includes anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs, analgesics, hormones and diuretics.
  2. Psychobehavioural Therapy – This includes exercise and psychotherapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, coping skills training and relaxation techniques.
  3. Nutrition – This includes diet modification, vitamins, minerals and herbal preparations.

By gaining a better understanding of PMDD symptoms and treatment options, you’ll be much better equiped to deal with this condition.  Once you start looking, you’ll realize that there’s actually a great deal of information out there and support systems do exist that can really help you.

PMDD Treatment - My StoryI’d like to take this opportunity to tell you my story and let you in on the PMDD treatment that changed my life.

Like so many other women, I’ve suffered from Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder or PMDD for most of my life.  This is a severe form of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) that affects 3% to 8% of women.  Surprisingly, no-one knows much about it.

I’m a fairly average person – married with 2 children, a dog and a mortgage.  The thing that has always differentiated me from most other women is that for a few days every month, I used to turn into someone else.  I say ‘used to’ because things are very different today.

“How is that possible?” you may ask.  Well, every month – about a week or so before my period was due to start – I’d become really irritable, anxious and depressed.  I would burst into tears for no reason and have awful mood swings.  As you can imagine, this had a huge impact on my family and the people I worked with.  Dealing with an irrational, emotional wreck is no easy job.

When my period did finally start, I’d suffer from painful cramps, headaches and bloatedness.  I’d also develop an incredibly sweet tooth and crave sugary snacks, cakes and chocolate.  This, of course, lead to extra weight gain – something to feel even more depressed about!

Then, 2-3 days after the start of my period, all those feelings would subside and I’d become myself again.

Sadly, I put up with it for years and even my husband learned to live with it.  He’s an incredibly loving and supportive man and has had to deal with a lot over the years.  Soon after meeting me, he realized I needed some space at this time of the month.  So he always made a conscious effort not to aggravate things around this time and just offered a shoulder to cry on.  Really, he’s been my rock and I’m so grateful for his support.

As the children grew older, I started to notice the impact my behaviour was having on them.  And I didn’t like it.  They didn’t deserve to have a moody and irrational mother who flew off the handle for no reason.  It wasn’t the person I wanted to be.  So, at that point I decided that things had to change.

The Need For Answers and PMDD Treatment

Over the course of the next few months, I visited my doctor several times.  I was suprised by the vagueness and lack of certainty regarding my problems.  I’m not sure what I was expecting… maybe I wanted some answers.  Anyway, I was prescribed painkillers for the headaches and cramps, diuretics for the bloatedness and antidpressants to help with the feelings of anxiousness and depression.  They did make a difference and I started to feel much better, but the thought of being reliant on drugs on a long-term basis really worried me.  That’s when I started doing my own research.

It was only at this point that I realized I was suffering from PMDD.  It was never actually diagnosed by my doctor.

At the time, there was very little information around about PMDD symptoms and treatment.  Even today, its causes are largely unknown.

Having considered all of the PMDD treatment options available, I opted for the natural method.  This involved making some big changes to my lifestyle, but it’s been well worth it.  I still have the odd ‘off’ day, but am now a much happier and more relaxed person.  I no longer dread the arrival of my monthly period and am relieved that I’m not dependent on drugs for years to come.
